What Every Employee Needs To Know About Initial Probation Periods

There is no law determining the length of a probationary period. However, there is an expectation that the employer will be reasonable. It is typical for a probationary period to last no longer than six months.  And three months where an employee is moving to a new post internally.

You may find yourself facing an initial probation period when starting a new job.  In these hard economic times, there is stiff competition for jobs. More and more companies are instituting probation periods for newly hired employees.

  1. Clarify the purpose. The most common reason employers use probationary periods is to ensure that they’re satisfied with their hiring decision before making the arrangement permanent.
