I was working for an organization I really believed in – a non-profit that was doing great work and needed more money in order to succeed. As the Development Director, I was very frustrated, because despite all of our fundraising activities, we never seemed to be able to raise enough money to serve everyone who needed our help.
At the time, we were throwing everything up on the wall to see what stuck. Our non-profit was doing everything to try and raise money: events, direct mail, online fundraising, grant-writing, and more. And we were doing it with a very small staff and a very limited budget.
Every time we wanted to raise more money, we added another event… another mailing… another grant proposal. Sound familiar?
The big problem was that despite acting on every fundraising idea from our board and staff, we still had trouble reaching our fundraising goals. Our fundraising staff was worn out from running a million small fundraising strategies, and our entire team was frustrated because our fundraising had plateaued.
If we couldn’t raise more money, we wouldn’t be able to grow our programs… we wouldn’t be able to do more good in the world.
Then, Something Amazing Happened That Changed our Non-Profit Forever
As I prepared to send out yet another round of small grant proposals, I realized that our fundraising program was focusing on the wrong things.
Instead of focusing on dozens of fundraising strategies all at the same time, we needed a fundraising system in place… one that would allow our team to focus on only those strategies which would really produce results.
Instantly it became crystal clear to me how to shortcut the fundraising process by focusing on where our small fundraising team could raise the most money, and do it consistently: major donors. I saw that we could get off the fundraising treadmill and stop chasing down every fundraising idea that the board, the Executive Director, our our fundraising team came up with. Instead, we could focus on building a true major donor fundraising system for our organization… one that would help us find new major donors and get them engaged in our work for years to come.

I resolved, then and there, to start developing a successful system for major donor fundraising that works for every non-profit, including small organizations like ours.
So, I started researching fundraising best practices, talking to other fundraising experts, and reviewing everything I had learned in my years working in the trenches in order to learn the secrets of the world’s best major donor programs.

I tested and tweaked the system, and it worked. Once implemented, we were able to stop spending hundreds of hours on holding small events, preparing dozens of small grant proposals, and begging our board for new names every month.
